Location-based technology is technology that functions with real-time location tracking capabilities. It identifies the geographical and physical location of a user on an ongoing basis. In other words, it can basically tell if you’re sitting in Starbucks with your favourite coffee!
Location-based technology can be incorporated into any device, but is most often used with mobile devices. A mobile device contains a number of mechanisms that provide information on user location – RFID, cellular, Wi-Fi and GPS (Global Positioning System) – among others.
Using a mobile device’s GPS technology, location-based services can track a user’s location, if the user has allowed it. The information on their geographical and physical location, is known as geo-data. Geo-data is included in the performance of other functions and services.
Using real-time geodata, location-based services or LBS, provides navigation, tracking systems, entertainment, information, and security.
